Copenhagen – the Green City of Cyclists

Nyhed

Copenhagen is a green capital city with kilometers of wide bicycle tracks, bicycle bridges, cycle superhighways, and green cycle routes. And not to forget - we are even voted the world’s best city for cyclists. We strongly strive to retain this position in the future!

We are world famous for our unique bicycle infrastructure and cycling as our daily means of transportation. Copenhageners are nearly biking before they can walk – which is the reason why the bicycle is not surprisingly the preferred means of transportation when getting to school, sports activities, education or work. As a matter of fact, Copenhageners are in total biking just as much as 400 Tour de France races every day corresponding to 1,440,000 kilometers every day!

Over the last decade, the City of Copenhagen has invested approximately 1.5 billion Danish kroner in better bicycle infrastructure. Investments that are contributing to the development of a bicycle-friendly city and a strong cycling culture. We have built 16 car free bridges which provide unique shortcuts across the city for cyclists and pedestrians. In the autumn of 2019, another 67 million Danish kroner were allocated to e.g. new bicycle tracks, intelligent traffic signals, removal of abandoned bicycles, and new lighting at the bicycle track along Amager Common. In addition, 17 million Danish kroner have been allocated for building safe school routes to ensure better conditions for cycling and walking for children in Copenhagen.

But it doesn’t end here. The City of Copenhagen constantly aims for improvements and new initiatives:

“We are currently looking into how bicycling as a green means of transportation can contribute to reducing the total amount of carbon emissions in Copenhagen. We are also mapping the streets in the city which appear to be the most unsafe for children and their parents in order to make cycling and walking to school more attractive. We are moreover sharing our knowledge with other cycling cities in the rest of Denmark and abroad to continually inspire and learn from one another”, says Program Manager Marie Kåstrup at the City of Copenhagen.

We hope that the Tour de France Grand Départ in Copenhagen in 2022 will encourage even more Copenhageners, commuters in the municipalities nearby, and people from allover the world to jump in the saddle. We surely endeavor that Copenhagen should remain the world’s best city of cyclists!
