Individual time trial, 13 km

Stage 1: Map and details

Kort over ruten til 1. etape i København

Route description

The individual time trial starts on Nørre Farimagsgade near Ørstedparken. The park is named after the famous H.C. Ørsted, who was celebrated in 2020 for the 200th anniversary of the discovery of electro-magnetism.

The name of starting street ironically stems from the fact that people, hundreds of years ago, referred to this street as a place to go slowly and quietly. It will be anything but slow or quiet when the riders race towards the first sharp turn, leading them towards Copenhagen’s artificial lakes and Dronning Louise’s Bridge.

The bridge is nothing short of the world’s most used cycle lane, which is used daily by more than 40,000.

Having crossed the bridge, the riders take a right turn on Fælledvej and continue on Blegdamsvej before they turn right again back over the lakes crossing Fredensbro.

From here, the route follows the lakes north to Trianglen, a busy part of Copenhagen, which connects three city districts: Nørrebro, Østerbro and the Inner City.

The riders continue north up Øster Allé along the big recreation area, Fælledparken, and past the Parken Stadium – national stadium of the national Danish football team and FC Copenhagen.

Two sharp right turns take the riders to Jagtvej and afterwards down Østerbrogade to Dag Hammerskjolds Allé.

All in all, the first nine kilometres are all broad roads and only eight sharp turns to reduce the riders’ pace.

This is changed, however, by a more technically demanding section, when the route twists and turns along the historic Citadel of Copenhagen, which dates back to 1662.

Here the roads become narrow, and a very sharp right turn takes the riders past The Little Mermaid as they race down the pier Langelinie, which follows Copenhagen’s harbour side.

After this section, the pace once again rises all the way to the finish line. The next section past Amalienborg will be a familiar sight for cycling fans who remember the fantastic scenes from the 2011 UCI Road World Championships.

The pace is high when the riders pass the local landmarks of The Marble Church, Kongens Nytorv and the picturesque Nyhavn. On the final kilometres, the route takes the riders under the architectural landmarks of The Royal Library and the modern BLOX.

Only a few hundred metres after passing BLOX, the riders sprint towards the finish line on H.C. Andersen’s Boulevard, where the stage ends just outside the city’s main square.

Time table for the first stage

The first rider will be start on Nørre Farimagsgade by Rådhuspladsen at 16.00.

Thereafter, the remaining 175 riders will be sent off at 1-minute intervals until last year's winner, Tadej Pogacar of the UAE Emirates, will be the last to leave at 18.55.

The riders are expected to be approx. 15 minutes to complete the course, and thus the last rider is expected to finish at H.C. Andersens Boulevard approx. 19.10.

Before the race itself, the Tour de France publicity caravan can be experience on the course from 14.30-14.50.
