Discover Sønderborg
The third stage finishes in Sønderborg with beautiful nature, a view of the sea in every direction, café life, shopping, fast-paced development, and dramatic Danish history in a diverse border region.
Beautiful beech forests, rolling fields, and a view of the sea in every direction are the hallmarks of Sønderborg. Experience the delights on foot, on a bike or horseback, on the white, sandy beaches or out among the waves in a kayak or on a surfboard.
In the city of Sønderborg, you can shop in the shops in the city centre, at the shopping mall Borgen, or at Center Øst. The cafés and restaurants serve everything from award-winning burgers to local delicacies and world-class gourmet food.
The iconic promenade in Sønderborg extends from Sønderborg Castle, moves past the colourful facades of old residences, and ends by the modern neighbourhood of Byens Havn. From the Point of View on the 16th floor, you can marvel at the view, or you can visit Denmark’s largest wellness facilities.
Some of the most dramatic chapters of Danish history have been written on the hills outside of Sønderborg. After a bloody battle in 1864, Denmark lost Southern Jutland to the Prussians, but in 1920, the region became Danish once again following a referendum. The history of the borderlands is vividly narrated at Sønderborg Castle and History Centre Dybbøl Banke.
It is easy to reach Sønderborg from the highway, by train, or daily flights to and from Copenhagen.
